3,Delta Quadrant - News Update
4,by Simon Plumbe
After much deliberation, months of careful planning, and a vast
amount of time and energy, Infinite Frontiers is proud to announce
that its first ever Star Trek convention, now re-named DELTA
QUADRANT, is back!!
Now that we have re-organised our convention team, the fact that all
of the main convention functions are being performed internally, and
the fact that we are planning to run a smaller convention, things
have progressed far quicker in the last three months than they did in
over 6 months for Dominion.
Because of this, we are able to confirm virtually all of the main
details for the con, namely that Delta Quadrant is scheduled to take
place over the weekend of 10th and 11th August 1996, at the Britannia
Hotel located in Birmingham city centre. The con will feature a
packed programme, with the following special events:
* Video programme showing all the latest DS9 and Voyager episodes,
right up to the end of Season 4 for DS9 and all of Season 2 for
Voyager. As well as this, there will be an ample selection of some
of the best Classic Trek and TNG epsiodes, as well as a multitude
of episodes from a variety of other sci-fi/fantasy TV shows.
We are also discussing with the hotel about the possibility of
running the video programme all through the night for those
insomniacs out there!
* Saturday night will see the (optional) fancy dress disco - a
Federation themed party that will run on well into the small hours
of Sunday morning! There will be spot prizes for fancy dress
entries (everyone will win a cat!) and the DJ we are hiring has
agreed to play WHATEVER WE WANT!!
* Guest talks. We have already two confirmed guests in the shape of
Tim Gaskill from the Official Star Trek Fan Club Of The UK and
Robert Hollocks from CIC Video both of whom will be giving talks
during the weekend. We are also in the middle of discussions to
bring you two further guests hopefully including a cast member from
Star Trek and possibly a guest from Babylon 5 as well!!
* Throughout the weekend, we will also be running a tournament for
players of the Star Trek: The Next Generation Customisable Card
Game. If you've ever wondered what this game is like, now's your
chance to find out, and maybe even take part!
* For attendees who arrive early, we are planning a two or three room
video programme on the Friday evening showing some of the latest
Trek episodes from DS9 and Voyager.
As well as this we are hoping to arrange for a late-night showing
of one of the Trek movies (chosen by the con attendees) in a nearby
cinema.
* A charity auction and raffle with some amazing items on offer.
Already the auction has a number of signed and rare pieces of
merchandise including signed photos of Denise Crosby, James Doohan
and for all you X-Files fans out there (!), a signed photo of
Gillian Anderson! Also, we have a -VERY- rare plate on offer from
The Hamilton Collection that I can GUARANTEE you won't be able to
buy anywhere!!
* An Alternative Programme room which will feature the TNG Card Game
Tournament, autograph sessions, discussion panels and this will
also be bookable by attendees to hold their own mini-events during
the weekend.
* A comprehensive dealers room featuring some of the UK's top Star
Trek dealers offering a wide range of merchandise at competetive
prices. There will be something in here for everyone, and to suit
all pockets!
* Discussions are underway about a special deal for attendees of
Delta Quadrant for either reduced rates or even a special group
booking at Cafe Surf - Birmingham's top cybercafe where you can
surf the internet to your heart's content! We may even be arranging
an exclusive session where we will have sole use of the cafe!
* All this and much, much more!
The convention is being run to raise money for the AIDS charity The
Terrance Higgins Trust, and we are hoping to raise several thousand
pounds through the auction and the raffle.
However, places for this convention are strictly limited. Once we
have reached our target figure of around 350 attendees, we will stop
accepting registrations, so if you are interested in coming along,
hurry and book NOW.
For a registration form, send an SAE to:
Infinite Frontiers Conventions
PO Box 8966
Great Barr

Registration for the weekend will cost £35 per person with reductions
for attendees under 15. This will cover registration for the weekend,
and will see you receiving a con pack containing your con badge, a
64+ page convention magazine and discount vouchers for a variety of
venues in Birmingham! We are also hoping to arrange a few other
benefits available through registering - more information on these
will be made available soon!
Hotel accommodation will also be available at the reduced rate of £35
per night (normally £70 in the Britannia!) for bed and breakfast, and
cheap food will be available in the hotel throughout the weekend.
